Precise locations: 43о40 N and 28o10’ E at altitude 236 m.

Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute belongs to the eastern part of the moderately continental climatic region of Bulgaria. The plateau relief, the constant winds and the proximity of the Black Sea determine the specific climate of this region. Although the winters are severe, extremely low air temperatures are rare: January is the coldest month of the year with temperature norm of -0.5°С and absolute minimum air temperature of -22.7°С measured in1954.

July is the hottest month of the year with temperature norm +20.9°С and absolute maximum air temperature +38.5°С registered in 1985. The annual precipitation norm is 527.5 mm, with a maximum in June (67.3 mm). Most of the rainfalls (56.4 % on the average) come during the months of the vegetative growth of plants. The annual minimum is in January (30.5 mm). The relative air humidity varies from 69% to 88%. Its mean value of 78% is significantly higher than the average for Bulgaria.

The soils in the experimental field of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute are representative for the slightly leached chernozems and belong to the most fertile soils in Bulgaria with a potential for high yields. They are characterized by a comparatively powerful humus horizon (60-80 cm) and by their humus content in the plow layer are referred to the moderately humic types of soil. The specific properties of these soils are neutral reaction, low reserves of available nitrogen and phosphorus and moderate to good reserves of exchangeable potassium. Their mechanical composition provides a favorable combination of water-physical properties and very good structure of the subsoil horizons.

According to the agro-ecological zones of Bulgaria, the experimental field of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute belongs to agro-ecological zone I9.

All of the above conditions make the region of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute very suitable for growing of various field crops: wheat, barley, triticale, maize, sunflower, bean, pea, chickpea, etc.
