THE SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY OF DOBRUDZHA AGRICULTURAL INSTITUTE – A RICH DATA BANK FOR RESEARCHERS, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN THE FIELD OF AGRARIAN SCIENCES

Добруджански земеделски институтThe Scientific library is a special type of library with certain requirements both to the librarians working there and the users. According to the famous library specialist O.S. Chubaryan “The scientific and specialized libraries are called upon to satisfy the needs primarily of those readers, who are related to production and research activities and to the education and preparation of highly qualified specialists from all branches of the national economy and culture”.

The Scientific library of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute was opened with the establishment of the institute itself in 1951. It operates on an area of 307 m2 and is currently situated in the Laboratory complex in Dobrich. Its rich collection consists of 33 955 items, a considerable part of which constitute the fund of the Central Agricultural Library of the Agricultural Academy. 17149 items of these are books, 13854 are periodicals, 2952 are other types of materials (photocopies, micro films, Ph.D. theses, etc.).

The library fund is enriched through subscription, donations, and exchange with Bulgarian and foreign libraries. The Central Agricultural Library of AA ensures the supply of their refereed and indexed editions Plant breeding sciences, Soil science, agrochemistry and agro ecology, Animal breeding science, Bulgarian journal of agricultural science.
The library collection includes a large number of foreign periodicals with impact factor.
Inter-library borrowing is carried out, which is an important and indispensable part of the supply of scientific literature to the readers.
The scientific library is a rich data bank in the field of agrarian sciences. The research literature is organized in separate funds (referential and operational) with all necessary catalogs and filing systems. The collection comprises of literature useful to researchers, students and lecturers in the agricultural sphere of science.

The literature is accessible also through the catalogs, which the library operates on a daily basis when searching for information – alphabetic, systematic and topographic catalogs.
Another important and indispensable part of the library’s activity are the index personality cards containing 7000 research papers of scientists from DAI in Bulgarian and foreign languages, as well as files with more than 200 Ph.D. theses and abstracts of researchers and specialists from DAI and other institutions in the field of the agrarian science. Since 2020, a systematic catalogue of the titles of the Ph.D. theses and abstracts is also developed to optimize the search for scientific information.
The research library has become a useful and necessary structure of any research organization, which influences the entire research process – from the very beginning, by providing necessary information for the fulfillment of the research tasks to the end by giving publicity to the research results, processing the information and including it in various information systems and databases. The research library is a window to the scientific knowledge and its constant enrichment confirms the fifth law of Ranganathan (a prominent Indian librarian), according to which the library is a developing organism.
