November 1st – Day of the National Enlighteners

Bulgaria has faced both decline and revival throughout its history. It has always been strong, but has been great when fortresses were built sided by side with literary schools.

These schools were founded by enlightened education workers whose mission was to wake up the self-awareness of the Bulgarians as a nation. During the hard times of the Ottoman yoke and illiteracy, they managed to pull the people from ignorance, gave them back their spiritual stability and provoked their desire to change their everyday life, ultimately making tomorrow’s history.

On the first day of November, we commemorate these honorable men and women and celebrate the day as a national holiday of historic memory and national identity. This is a day to be grateful to all those known and unknown, past and present national education and enlightenment workers – scientists, researchers, teachers, writers, journalists and creators from all fields and generations for the legacy they left to us – the idea of spiritual awakening as a prerequisite for a better future, both personal and national.

For us, as a part of the scientific community of Bulgaria, this holiday is an occasion to make a wish for health and creative energy to keep the idea alive!
