DAI presented seventeen cereal crop varieties at the Day of Open Doors in Loznitza

At the Day of Open Doors organized by Sole Trader Stefan Georgiev – NIM on 14th June in Loznitsa, Razgard District, 17 out of the total of 50 presented cereal varieties were breeding of Dobrudzha Agricultural Institute – General Toshevo. They were presented by Ph.D. student Atanas Atanasov, agronomist at DAI, in demo plots sown with 9 cultivars of common winter wheat (Nikodim, Rada, Zhana, Kossara, Fani, Kiara, Andronia, Indzhe and Roki 3), 4 barley cultivars (Ahat, Tangra, Brilyantin and Fanagoria), and 4 сорта triticale cultivars (Respekt, Doni-52, Dobrudzhanets and Borislav).

A part of these cultivars are already well established in practice and are well known to the agricultural producers. Cultivars Andronia, Roki 3 and Indzhe are from the most recent breeding of the institute. Rocky 3 is a joint development of DAI and Agricultural Experimental Station – Dunav LTD.

Cultivar ANDRONIA

This cultivar is a white-spiked awned wheat with red grain. The stem is short (74-83 cm) and highly resistant to lodging. The leaves are grass-green, almost without waxiness and semi-curved prior to heading. In a normal crop, this cultivar forms up to 5 florets in a spikelet, and 3-4 of them usually form grains. The spike is medium long (8.5-11 сm), with medium long awns, and becomes golden yellow at maturity. Grain is red, large (45-47 g weight per 1000 kernels), with smooth surface and egg shape.  This cultivar is medium early, with duration of the vegetative growth 219 days, with resistance to lodging and medium cold resistance. Averaged for 2019 – 2021, a yield of 789 kg/da grain was obtained in the experimental fields of the national Executive Agency of variety testing, field inspection and seed control. Under infection field conditions, the cultivar demonstrated high resistance to powdery mildew and brown rust.

Cultivar Roki 3

Cultivar Roki 3 is a white awned wheat with red grain. The stem is medium high (85-90 cm), and spike length is 11 cm. The cultivar develops a powerful spike with fast grain filling. Grain is red, large, with absolute weight of 42 – 44 g and test weight of 81 – 82 g. The duration of the vegetative growth is 234 days. Under conditions of lodging, the cultivar demonstrated medium resistance, bending slightly under rainfalls and storm. It is highly drought- and cold resistant and possesses complex resistance to powdery mildew, brown and yellow rust and septoria. Averaged for the period 2020 – 2021, a yield of 867 kg/da was obtained in the experimental fields of the national Executive Agency of variety testing, field inspection and seed control.

Cultivar INDZHE

The cultivar is a white-spiked awned wheat with red grain from quality group B (wheat of medium strength). The stem is medium high (85-102 cm) and has very good resistance to lodging. The leaves are dark green, with slight waxiness and are semi-erect to erect. In a normal crop, the cultivar forms up to 5 florets per spikelet, and usually 3-4 of them turn into grains. The spike is medium long (10-11 cm), with medium long awns and becomes golden yellow at maturity. The grain is red, large (weight of 48-53 g per 1000 kernels), with smooth surface and egg shape. This is an early cultivar, with duration of the vegetative growth 234 days, with very good lodging resistance and high cold resistance. Averaged for the period 2020 – 2021, a yield of 850 kg/da grain  was obtained in the experimental fields of the national Executive Agency of variety testing, field inspection and seed control. Under infection field conditions, the cultivar demonstrated very high resistance to powdery mildew and high resistance to brown rust.
